Friday silliness: Conquistador Coffee
R.I.P. Robert Culp
For four years, fans of the one and only Andrew WK have yearned for a US release of 2006's Japanese release, "Close Calls With Brick Walls." Import copies have been crazy expensive – but as of yesterday, this amazing piece of rock and roll is finally available at normal retail price in the U.S.
I find myself absolutely fascinated by Andrew. At first blush (especially if one's first exposure was "I Get Wet"), he appears to be just really manic, dumb-guy rock. But there's a bunch more going on under the surface. He's an amazing musician. He writes really interesting, positive lyrics. And the musical progression on this disc is just astonishing. At $9 for the Amazon download (39 songs!), this is one of the best musical treats you can give yourself right now. Wish I could have seen this, at SXSW a few weeks ago – it's the opening cut from the disc:The evils of socialism (author unknown)
James Randi comes out, at 81
Well, here goes. I really resent the term, but I use it because it’s recognized and accepted.
I’m gay.
From some seventy years of personal experience, I can tell you that there’s not much “gay” about being homosexual. For the first twenty years of my life, I had to live in the shadows, in a culture that was — at least outwardly — totally hostile to any hint of that variation of life-style. At no time did I choose to adopt any protective coloration, though; my cultivation of an abundant beard was not at all a deception, but part of my costume as a conjuror.
Gradually, the general attitude that I’d perceived around me began to change, and presently I find that there has emerged a distinctly healthy acceptance of different social styles of living — except, of course, in cultures that live in constant and abject fear of divine retribution for infractions found in the various Holy Books… In another two decades, I’m confident that young people will find themselves in a vastly improved atmosphere of acceptance.
Fifteen songs you can play solely with G, C and D chords:

“You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC
“Leaving on a Jet Plane” by John Denver
“Sweet Home Alabama” by Lynyrd Skynyrd
“Will the Circle Be Unbroken”
“Roll in My Sweet Baby’s Arms”
“This Land is Your Land”
“Amazing Grace”
“The Wabash Cannonball”
“Nine Pound Hammer”
“Lonesome Road Blues”
This is only a test
This would be a godsend. Every time I want to buy a new Arcade title, I have to delete an old one from my too-full-of-Rock-Band-songs hard drive. Did you hear that, Microsoft? I want to buy stuff from you, but your archaic storage options are preventing me from giving you my money!
