"Close Calls with Brick Walls" finally comes to the states

by James

For four years, fans of the one and only Andrew WK have yearned for a US release of 2006's Japanese release, "Close Calls With Brick Walls." Import copies have been crazy expensive – but as of yesterday, this amazing piece of rock and roll is finally available at normal retail price in the U.S.

I find myself absolutely fascinated by Andrew. At first blush (especially if one's first exposure was "I Get Wet"), he appears to be just really manic, dumb-guy rock. But there's a bunch more going on under the surface. He's an amazing musician. He writes really interesting, positive lyrics.

And the musical progression on this disc is just astonishing. At $9 for the Amazon download (39 songs!), this is one of the best musical treats you can give yourself right now.

Wish I could have seen this, at SXSW a few weeks ago – it's the opening cut from the disc:

The evils of socialism (author unknown)

by James
This morning I was awoken by my alarm clock powered by electricity generated by the public power monopoly regulated by the U.S. Department of Energy.

I then took a shower in the clean water provided by a municipal water utility.

After that, I turned on the TV to one of the FCC-regulated channels to see what the National Weather Service of the National Oceanographic and Atmospheric Administration determined the weather was going to be like, using satellites designed, built, and launched by the National Aeronautics and Space Administration.

I watched this while eating my breakfast of U.S. Department of Agriculture-inspected food and taking the drugs which have been determined as safe by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

At the appropriate time, as regulated by the U.S. Congress and kept accurate by the National Institute of Standards and Technology and the U.S. Naval Observatory, I get into my National Highway Traffic Safety Administration-approved automobile and set out to work on the roads build by the local, state, and federal Departments of Transportation, possibly stopping to purchase additional fuel of a quality level determined by the Environmental Protection Agency, using legal tender issued by the Federal Reserve Bank.

On the way out the door I deposit any mail I have to be sent out via the U.S. Postal Service and drop the kids off at the public school.

After spending another day not being maimed or killed at work thanks to the workplace regulations imposed by the Department of Labor and the Occupational Safety and Health administration, enjoying another two meals which again do not kill me because of the USDA, I drive my NHTSA car back home on the DOT roads, to my house which has not burned down in my absence because of the state and local building codes and Fire Marshal's inspection, and which has not been plundered of all its valuables thanks to the local police department, and which has not been bombed to smithereens thanks to the various branches of the United States Armed Forces.

And then I log on to the internet — which was developed by the Defense Advanced Research Projects Administration — and post on Freerepublic.com and Fox News forums about how SOCIALISM in medicine is BAD because the government can't do anything right.

James Randi comes out, at 81

by James
Wow … the remarkable James Randi, comes out of the closet at age 81. I particularly love that last sentence: “In another two decades, I’m confident that young people will find themselves in a vastly improved atmosphere of acceptance.”

Well, here goes. I really resent the term, but I use it because it’s recognized and accepted.

I’m gay.

From some seventy years of personal experience, I can tell you that there’s not much “gay” about being homosexual. For the first twenty years of my life, I had to live in the shadows, in a culture that was — at least outwardly — totally hostile to any hint of that variation of life-style. At no time did I choose to adopt any protective coloration, though; my cultivation of an abundant beard was not at all a deception, but part of my costume as a conjuror.

Gradually, the general attitude that I’d perceived around me began to change, and presently I find that there has emerged a distinctly healthy acceptance of different social styles of living — except, of course, in cultures that live in constant and abject fear of divine retribution for infractions found in the various Holy Books… In another two decades, I’m confident that young people will find themselves in a vastly improved atmosphere of acceptance.

"The House is best seen as an elementary school with 435 egotistical, attention-seeking children."

Is USB Storage In The Xbox 360's Future? – Xbox 360 – Kotaku

by James

This would be a godsend. Every time I want to buy a new Arcade title, I have to delete an old one from my too-full-of-Rock-Band-songs hard drive. Did you hear that, Microsoft? I want to buy stuff from you, but your archaic storage options are preventing me from giving you my money!
